Daily Gospel Devotional: January 16

Matthew 2:19-23

The planting period…

If the dream of God, Christ in you, is going to grow in your life, it has to be planted in good soil. The pot that holds the plant may be moved, but eventually, the plant has to be taken outside. It isn’t meant to stay in the greenhouse; it is made to spread out in the garden. The fragrance of Christ must be in the world, but not of it.

When the fullness of Christ is the dream for your life, the things that would hold sway over you and distract you will evaporate as the Evangel takes center stage in your existence. If you will die to self, the enemies of your soul will have no authority over you (John 12:24-26). You have to stay the course, and let God set that course. Even when you know the way back into battle, often there will be new dangers lurking, and you need to keep listening. Just as you were led to safety on your way out, as you walk on the way of obedience, you will be led to safety on your way in.

The formation of Christ in your life is where the safe passage lies. It is a fulfillment of God’s plan for you (Romans 8:28-29 / Ephesians 1:4).
