I Wanted To Let You Know

Apparently, our Canadian friend and Perry Como crooner Neil Shay, aka the Bugblaster, was so moved by this post and this post that now he wants to write me some songs...

I just thought I'd warn him up front that I have a few more ditties up my sleeve, but if you wanna go, Neil, I'm all ears...

A favor please - I requested that a non-believer to whom I have recently been presenting the gospel, read the book of John.

Rather than being drawn to the passages that I had prayed that he would that would lead to salvation, this is the comment I received, "What I found just as interesting as the text is all the debate about whether certain passages were written by John or someone a few centuries later or maybe by Luke."

How would you answer this? I know little of church history or things such as these and simply take the scripture to be exactly that, Holy Scripture - as is, no ifs, ands or buts.

Thank you.

How did they get that debate out of the text?

That wasn't the reading assignment, yet it does show that the person will do what it takes to avoid the gospel...ask him to show you the sources...take them back to sin, Jesus himself, etc...

That other stuff is just a smokescreen, and people have dealt with those particular issues (dates and aouhtors, etc.), many websites that deal with that sort of thing...

Bible.org
Carm.org

Many many others, those just came to mind right away...

Why would those sources (the "debate") be any more relaible than what you believe?

I just did that one the run as I must be going out this evening, but perhaps I will provide some more larter, or email me, and especially look at the book review I just did, that book will do a lot, because who Jesus IS is the whole deal...

Halfmom, it's a smokescreen. It you put that fire out then the person will simply light more. I usually say, "That is an interesting question, but first can we talk about . . . ."

Thanks Jonathan...so there you have it, halfmom, a working pastor and a very soon to be seminary professor (Dr. Moorhead will be in Russia, see his site for missionary info) are saying the same thing...this is not to cause casual dismissal, but to understand that no matter the "reason", "excuse", or "objection", the issues are always the same...and yuo always steer them in the same direction, i.e. what about Sin, and what about Jesus...

ES - I lost my blog somewhere in Cyberspace shortly after posting this question to you so am just now getting back, via temporary blog as I'm hoping they can retrieve mine, to read your answer and that of the kind professor (I do have a soft spot for professors, we are an odd breed).

I came to realize that, indeed, it was a smoke screen. He came up with the "information" by apparently reading the gopsel via the internet. Who knows what he actually read. But that particular answer and a few in the days afterwards, revealed that he had interests in other than what I believed - which is probably how I lost my blog when I deleted my google chat - sin is so deceptive, isn't it?

Craver has graciously loaned me his copy of VofV to read while he finishes his current book. I read "All Dream and No Steam" this morning as part of my quiet time and found it quite convicting so wanted to say thanks and to let you know where I was and that I was still reading.
